This Just In - You Work While VCs Go Skiing

From Fred Wilson: I Had A Great Day Yesterday

You can almost hear the “ne ner ne ner ne ner” from Fred as he describes his day of fun skiing (at a rate of $400 per person - a paltry sum to be sure) with his kids while a bunch of stuff got done.  There are a few take aways from this for would be venture seekers:

  1. You don’t need a VC to get stuff done
  2. VCs exploit companies and non-VC employees to fund their lifestyle
  3. You probably won’t ever get to go cat skiing, but you can bask in the glow of people who do, like VCs
  4. VCs will take credit for the work you do

The subtle arrogance of this post is far beyond anything I have ever, ever read from Fred.  Maybe he just doesn’t realize that the rest of the world doesn’t live in bajillion dollar townhomes, and vacations with their family on a $1600 per day burn rate, but this one really cheesed me off.

sorry about that. i didn’t mean to cheese you or anyone else off.

i posted last week that i find it impossible to stop working when i am on vacation

http://avc.blogs.com/a_vc/2008/03/working-on-vaca.html

and i got a bunch of great comments that basically said “chill out, check out, relax”

so i took their advice, had a great day when i did no work, and i blogged about it

the point was to thank the people who got stuff done while i was away.

it upsets me that you (and certainly others) took it the wrong way.

i understand that being a VC is perceived as a cushy job where you take advantage of the hard work of others and feel badly that i contributed to that viewpoint
