78% of 95% Of All Statistics Are Made Up 72% Of The Time…I Think

From TechCrunch: Save The Developers (I was hoping it was advice about NOT wearing crocs and blacks socks…no dice)

Bad statistics are worse then no statistics. First of all I guaran-freaking-tee more then 30 some odd percent of people are still using IE6. My own research (double blind inverse proportionality cross referenced) shows it’s a lot closer to pretty much everyone - the blacked rimmed glasses silver apple accessory having crowd…all 189 of them.

From my own time spent tracking users on a consumer product targeting normal people it was about 85% windows XP and IE6. Take that for what’s it’s worth…not much. From the W3schools own website:

W3Schools is a website for people with an interest for web technologies. These people are more interested in using alternative browsers than the average user. The average user tends to use Internet Explorer, since it comes preinstalled with Windows. Most do not seek out other browsers.

These facts indicate that the browser figures above are not 100% realistic. Other web sites have statistics showing that Internet Explorer is used by at least 80% of the users.

In other words we cater to nerds. So our stats are horribly inaccurate for predicting real world internet use, but go ahead and use them if you would like to try and convince people of things that aren’t happening; such as world domination of firefox or the Mac OS.
